Red Cliffs upset the Suns

RADIO reports Saturday morning promoted a 30-shot win for the Irymple Suns after a big week on the training track in the return round of Sunraysia pennant bowls.

Maurie Press, president of Red Cliffs, had different ideas as he fired up his team for their encounter with a 29-19 win over Graham Lynch to launch the Tigers towards a victory.

The Suns’ David Gray quickly answered with a 28-17 win over Michael Clifford to give his side a one-shot advantage.

Bruce Harford had Matt West in his sights. Mark Ford, Ron Robinson and Joseph Leksas backed up their skip to pull out a four-shot win to give the home side a three-shot victory, 75(10) to 72(2).

Workers, struggling to find form prior to the break, came out with all guns blazing against the form side Merbein.

Ken Job got the Workers off to a flyer when his rink of Peter Bishop, Brian Horton and Di Smith cracked the Hawks’ top side of Jumbo Greenhill, Evan Rice, Eric Watson and John Pineo to record a 37-14 win.

Nev Mitchell had the better of David Maud in a 26-21 win. Roger Bray was held to a draw by Shawn Fullerton 28-apiece.

Workers got over the line 91(11) to 63(1) and now sitting fourth on the table.

Up the street, Mildura were locked in a solid no-holds-barred fight with Ouyen. The Two Blues took the fight right up to the Magic.

Janet Vallance had her rink of Ning Pitcher, Geoff Hahnel and Harry Munro running on autopilot, causing serious havoc in the Ian Pollock quartet to record a 23-17 win.

Keith Sharman was kept honest by Alan Crook finally pulling out a 20-19 victory for the Magic.

New skip Ron O’Neil had control of his match against Mick Donaghy. O’Neil played some solid conversion shots to lead his rink of The Major, Judy Osborne and Jayden Taylor to a defining 27-13 win. The Magic won 64(10) to 55(2).

Second Division matches had no big surprises. Irymple collected all the points against Workers 83(12) to 51(-). Phil Newton, Gus Storer, Chris Scott and Terry Wright led the way with a 32-16 win over Ron Boyd.

Coomealla kept top spot after a close contest with Nangiloc. Ben Mansell got over Brian Tyers 29-21 to give the ’Loc a jump. Adrian Barko answered for the Cannons with a 25-18 win over Jamie Forte. Brandon Tyers ensured a Cannons victory 81(10) to 65(2) by accounting for Toby Moore 35-18.

Mildura were taken to task by the visiting Ouyen, who came into the last end leading by one shot. Jon Underwood’s rink of Garry Holmes, Shirley Pupillo and Chris Richards picked up four shots when Holmes trailed the jack back into a cluster of Mildura bowls to give the home side a 69(10) to 66(2) victory.

Third Division ladder leaders Wentworth continued their run to the finals recording a solid 30-shot win over Euston. Jacob Ralph’s rink of Trevor Page, sub and Rod Baird led the charge with a 26-15 win over Doug Brown. Wentworth won 77(12) to 47(0).

Red Cliffs finished the better in their match against Workers to win 72(10) to 64(2). Irymple recorded a solid 41-shot win over Merbein 91(12) to 50(0). Franz Wilmann led the Suns’ victory with Rob Harrigan, John Harmer and John Vuik pulling out a 42-10 win over Ollie Dichiera. Underbool at home proved to good for Mildura recording a 78(10) to 69(2) win.

Fourth Division ladder leaders Coomealla recorded a 52(6) to 43(2) win over Irymple. Euston 2 defeated Euston 3 60(8) to 43(0). Mildura 4 defeated Mildura 5 in a very low-scoring match 52(8) to 25(0).
