Scott the lot – Euston gun claims sixth champion title

EUSTON bowler Glenn Scott has completed the rare double winning both the Bowls Sunraysia State Singles and Bowls Sunraysia Champion of Champions Singles titles.

In a scintillating final against Ouyen’s Norm Latta on Sunday, Scott emerged victorious 25 to 22 to claim his sixth Champion of Champions crown.

Scott made his way into the final with a resounding 25 to 8 win over Chris Mitchell.

The Euston gun’s draw bowling was a standout feature of the game, racing away to lead 12 to nil after four ends, leaving Mitchell a bridge too far to reign in the deficit.

In the second semi-final Ouyen’s Norm Latta paired off against Coomealla’s champion Adrian Barko.

That match was solid all the way through as both players rated consistently into the head.

Latta finally broke away to claim the win 25 to 19 and earn his place in the main dance.

The final commenced at a cracking pace with both players exchanging shots.

With the score at 12-11 in Scott’s favour the game was called to a halt due to the heat rule as once the temperature reaches 38 degrees play is paused.

Normally players wait for one hour during which time if the temperature falls below 38 degrees the game can recommence. If it does not play is abandoned for the day and a time is scheduled for the resumption.

In an extraordinary decision play was allowed to recommence after the hour had passed, with the temperature still above the 38 level.

Both players continued to ply their trade in a tough shoot out.

Scott finally got a slight break heading into the last stanza of the match to open up a three-shot lead while Latta responded to narrow the margin to trail 22-23.

Scott upped the ante and produced the match winner to take the title 25 to 22.

He’s enjoyed a stellar season to date adding the State Men’s Pairs title to his portfolio of wins and will have a busy schedule in March when he will represent Sunraysia at Murray Downs in the Murray Mallee Region Championships.

In the women’s section Mildura’s Judy Osborne defeated Nicole Smith from Wentworth 25 to 19 in semi-final one.

Smith, who’s new to the game, has made solid progress and took the game right up to Osborne and is to be commended on making the semi-final.

Ouyen’s Janet Vallance took on Red Cliffs champion Carolyn Coles in a match that produced some brilliant bowls from both players with several very tight heads.

With scores locked at 18 all, Vallance took it up a notch and produced some ripping bowls to take out the match 25 to 19.

The final commenced between Vallance and Osborne with both players on song.

With the scores at 9 to 7 in Vallance’s favour the heat rule was invoked and this time with the temperature remaining above 38C for an hour, play for the day was abandoned.

The pair will return to Coomealla to recommence play at a time and day to be advised.
