Mildura celebrates magic premiership

MILDURA turned the tables over Irymple in the Bowls Sunraysia Midweek Division 1 bowls grand final played at Coomealla on Wednesday.

The Irymple unit turned up ready to play and hit the ground running opening an early 10-shot lead over the Magic.

The Suns rink, skipped by Pam Lambert with Ian Kellett, Anne Kellett and Geof Madigan, jumped Joan Bunney’s rink and shot away to lead their rivals 18-3.

On the adjacent rink Mildura’s Shirley Pupillo with Mark Eckel at third, Glenys Yeowart and Isaiah Bettess on the mat had a battle royale with Dinkie Nichols’ quartet of Wayne Gardner, John Vuik and Julie Lowerson. Pupillo took a slender four-shot lead at the midway point.

Judy Osborne, Lindsay Lynch, Cecilia Ferdelja and Russell Kneebone kept pressing against the Suns four of Lorraine Millward, Noel Hiscock, Gail Vance and George Millward and led by three shots at the break.

Irymple were ahead on the main score board at lunch holding sway by eight, but upon resumption Mildura grabbed the momentum and quickly had the score board back to square.

Joan Bunney’s rink going on a scoring spree, collecting 10 shots in two ends, but ultimately succumbed to Lambert 21-29.

Pupillo and Osborne kept things tight in their matches and edged ahead. Play remained tight across the board.

The Magic rolled ahead by five shots with four ends to play and managed to hold sway to collect the flag, defeating a determined Irymple Sun’s side 69 shots to 65.

Osborne defeated Millward 24-21, Pupillo defeated Nichols 24-15 and Bunney lost to Lambert 21-29.

The second division final saw Irymple running out comfortable victors 51 shots to 29 over Mildura.

Christine Doherty, Peter Lambert, Ian McLean and Rita Lynch accounted for Marlene Scheele, Robert Hanns, Sally Watson and Wal Grembecki 29-13.

Next door Jill Duncan, John Harmer, Ruth Budde and Graham Bamford defeated Val Munro, Judy Morris, Alik Kowalewicz and Peter Ellis 22-16.
