Scott defends bowls crown

EUSTON star bowler Glenn Scott is aiming to win his sixth Bowls Sunraysia Champion of Champions Singles title in seven years this weekend.

Winning four times on the trot, the magician of the greens will defend his crown against nine other club champions at the world-class Coomealla Bowls Club on Saturday and Sunday.

All male and female club singles champion winners earn the opportunity to see who is the best of the best in the region, with the winners to qualify for the Mallee Murray region finals and the opportunity to earn their way into the Victorian state championships.

Scott finished last year’s event with a 25-6 victory in the final over Red Cliffs’ Michael Clifford, who will be back in the mix again to try to go one step further.

Also among the favourites is Mildura’s Mark Eckel. The in-form bowler has achieved almost everything in Sunraysia, the only piece of silverware missing being a Champion of Champion Singles title.

The trio have their work cut out, with Geoff Hahnel (Ouyen), Ken Hayes (Workers), Darren Kerslake (Nangiloc), Stephen Simmons (Underbool), Brandon Tyers (Coomealla) and Matt West (Irymple) all in contention for the crown.

In the women’s draw, a new champion will be crowned with Ouyen’s Janet Vallance not involved, her place taken by club mate Sue Kelly.

Mildura’s Judy Osborne has a strong history, having won the tournament multiple times and is the likely favourite, however Carolyn Coles of Red Cliffs has been mooted as a challenger.

Tania Gust (Coomealla), Daphne Loveday (Workers), Lorraine Millward (Irymple), Lina Morgan (Euston) and Jenny Wakefield (Underbool) will also be pushing for glory.

Action begins at 9.30am on Saturday and Sunday.
