Reigning premiers back on top

MILDURA grabbed top spot on the ladder after a tight tussle with Workers in Sunraysia pennant bowls at the weekend.

The reigning premiers had to work hard in the last stanza of their match against Workers. Chris Mitchell’s rink resurrected from 2-12 down, to collect a 26-21 win over Roger Bray, with Isaiah Bettess and Lindsay Lynch the stand out performers.

Mark Eckel prevailed over Ken Job 23-20 after dropping six shots on the 20th end of their match. At that point Workers took the overall lead by one. Mildura as a side gelled collectively to take a nine shot lead leaving Sharman still four ends to play against Pollock. In his usual fashion Sharman kept things tight, in the process conceding his first rink loss for the season to Pollock 21-20, but ensuring an overall win for the Magic.

At Kenny Park, the Merbein Hawks recorded a narrow win over Coomealla to climb off the bottom of the ladder. Shawn Fullerton had his rink of Jeff Greenhill, Eric Watson and Barry Fullerton in full flight as they recorded a 35-19 win over Mark Deakin and in the process covered Laurie McLaine’s 21-24 loss to Rod Taylor and Jack Anderson’s 20-23 demise to Brandon Tyers. Merbein recording a 76 (8) to 66 (4) win.

At the Cauldron, Iymple were hunting top spot on the ladder and needed to collect all the points against current ladder leader Ouyen. Steve Simmonds put a stop to that with a 28-25 win over the Suns’ Matt West, who had some misfortune when attempting a conversion shot that removed his only bowl in the head and dropped a six. Tanner Dickson-Arthur got home against Norm Latta 28-20 and Tom Hogan had his “heroes” on line to record a 24-16 win over Janet Vallance. The Suns recording a win 77 (10) to 64 (2). The Suns move to second and the Two Blues drop two spots to third.

In second division, Nangiloc reclaimed top spot with a 51 shot win over Merbein. Jamie Forte, Darren Kerslake, Ashley Andrew and Alan Erskine led the way for the ‘Loc’ with a solid 44-7 win over Bryce Midgley. Nangiloc 96 (11) to Merbein 45 (1).

Workers made a clean sweep of reigning premiers Mildura with an 81 (12) to 55 (0) win. Darren Cordwell, Brian Horton, Kerry Wallace and Graeme Worthington produced a 27-18 win over Jon Underwood’s rink.

Red Cliffs recorded the big result for the round when they outpointed Irymple. Michael Clifford, Ian Lowes, Don Reid and Greg John defeated Graeme Phillips, Ian Kellett, Tracie Storer and Russ Lynch 35-16. The Tigers saluting 75 (10) to Irymple 62 (2).

Third division saw Ouyen collect the points over Euston 70 (10) to 56 (2). Joan Pohlner, Reg Dean, Rod Fuller and Karen Crook won 30-11 over Shane Ryan to set the Two Blues up for the win.

Irymple knocked over ladder leaders Underbool, collecting all the points at the Cauldron. Gary Metcalf, Lorraine Millward, Rod Atkins and Terry Wright were the Suns’ best with a 26-17 win over Rob Gloster. Irymple 82 (12) to Underbool 61 (0).

Workers collected two rink wins over Mildura, but it was Formula One’s Alan Jones who recorded poll position with a 27-18 win over Dave Robertson. Jones’ pit crew of Graeme Hobbs, Marlene Scheele and Joan Bunney excelled. Mildura 67 (8) d Workers 65 (4).

Division four results: Coomealla 80 (10) d Red Cliffs 66 (2).

Mildura 61 (4) lost to Euston 74 (8). Adrian Nichols, Ian Anderson, Tony Scott and Jeff Lindsay prevailed 35-9 over Judy Morris.

Wentworth; 95 (10) d Irymple 55 (2). Ivan Behsmann’s team of Alan Behsmann, Rod Baird and Dianne Pumpa collected the first half century for the season with a 51-21 win over Reg Giles, Rod Ellis, Susi Dusting and Gail Vance.
