Nita Cooper’s Friend

February 24, 1923

A Flying Start for one Lady in the Contest.

One fair lady’s friend and admirers are already at work organising her candidature in the Mildura Grand Carnival beauty contest.

Miss Nita Cooper has both personal charms and capacity to charm, and her friends are beginning to monopolise the working power of the community.

At a meeting of Miss Cooper’s supporters held at the office of Mr. L. S. Lazarus, Deakin Avenue, on Thursday evening a committee of seventeen representatives men and women was formed to organise the candidature of this young lady.

Mr John Zimmer was elected president, Mr E.H. Praetz vice-president, Mrs. E.T Henderson, president of the ladies committee, Mr R.J. Roberts secretary, and Mr. M.J. Hoath treasurer.

It was decided that Miss Cooper’s colors be scarlet and gold.  And it was arranged that an evening be held at St. Ann’s on Thursday evening, March 1.

The friends of other suitable ladies should now began to be busy.

There is no worthier local cause than the hospital, and no easier way of extracting money from the pockets of the people than a popularity contest.

Our women and girls are the flower of womenkind.

There is no shortage of beauties but there is a regrettable backwardness on the part of some highly eligible ladies.

They would sell flowers or cakes for the hospital, but they are too modest to turn their beauty and popularity to account for the relief of suffering.

They are wrong, and a month or two hence they will bitterly regret that they took no part in what will undoubtedly be one of the greatest efforts ever made on behalf of Sunraysia charities.
