Saints pull out all the shots

THE weather is heating up and so is the Mildura Premier League Basketball as players hit the hardwood for round two of the season.

The Saints look like early-season favourites in the men’s league, pulling off an impressive 93-74 win over the Cobras.

Starting the game with a 14-0 run, the Saints looked to run away with the game, but the Cobras made a valiant effort to fight back into it.

However, the opposition’s shot-making ability was just too much.

Jack Deale led his victorious team with 29 points, and Trequan Rudd-Morfaw scored 23 for the Cobras.

The Boxing Cartel Demons secured the 62-48 win over the Tasco Hawks in a neck-and-neck game heading into the second quarter, with the victors putting on the gas as the game progressed.

Noah Valentich and Alexander Spooner for the Demons shared the scoring load leading the game in scoring with 21 and 20 points, respectively.

The Wildcats picked up where they left off and got the 85-54 win over the Irymple Tigers, making it back-to-back victories for the squad.

Dallas Brown for the Wildcats had a bounce-back game, leading the match in scoring with 27 points, having only scored four points in his first outing of the season.

ALCHERINGA Saints secured a big win over six-time reigning Mildura Basketball Association women’s Premier League champions Workers with a 22-point haul from Ally Leng leading the way.

The Saints doubled the score of the Warriors to win 82-41, which sets up a huge early season contest next Tuesday between them and fellow undefeated side Mildura Hawks.

Leng’s output was the biggest individual haul of the round, but there was plenty of support via Elke Meehan (16 points), Georgia Mayne (14 with three three-pointers) and Ava Zadow (11) all in double figures.

Kasey Caristo and Gabriella Marrone-Sadauskas shared top scoring honours for Workers with 11 each.

After their 25-18 win over Irymple in round 1, Hawks followed that up with a hard-fought 11-point win over Mildura Demons.

Amanda Edwards led the scoring with 12 points, Alyse Ross and Indi Spratt adding 10 each during the 46-35 result.

Demons gun Tracey Sherlock led her side with 11 points.

South Mildura Wildcats earned their first win of the new season, claiming an eight-point victory over Irymple.

Ava Hinton led Wildcats’ scoring with 15 points, seven of which came from the free-throw line, as they secured the 43-35 win.

Maddy Price and Sarah Carn added nine and eight points respectively, while Sierra Curtis led the way for the Tigers with 13 points.
