THE first day of NAIDOC Week was marked with a special community celebration at Nowingi Place yesterday.
A torrential downpour minutes before the ceremony did not hold Sunraysia residents back from enjoying the festivities, which included live performances, market stalls and cultural workshops.
The corroboree was opened with a traditional smoking ceremony led by an Aboriginal elder, followed by a dance performance on a stage of sand by the Millewa-Mallee dance group.
