A CAMPAIGN has begun to bring the body of an Anzac hero languishing in a Russian mortuary back to Mildura for a military funeral.

Wales-born Samuel Pearse came to Mildura as a young boy in the early 1900s, and his story is one that is both heroic and tragic.

He served on the Western Front in the Australian Imperial Force, where he was wounded and awarded the Military Medal for bravery in 1917.
