What’s Been Happening at OLSH

At OLSH we have been celebrating the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples through NAIDOC Week.

Part of that celebration was listening to a Dreamtime story called Bunjil the Creator. This story is about a wedge-tailed eagle who created the land and all life on Earth.

After listening and discussing the meaning behind the story, everyone across the school received a cut out of a feather to colour in and decorate. These feathers went on a big wedge-tailed eagle drawing and looked fantastic with all of the colour.

We had a NAIDOC liturgy which ended in a smoking ceremony that was fueled by eucalyptus leaves we held onto during prayer. We also showcased the wedge-tailed eagle to look upon during the ceremony.

After the liturgy all classes went and did an activity to do with NAIDOC Week. This taught us more about what the lifestyle and traditions of the First Australians was and still is.

The students at OLSH have also been busy donating different resources for Homelessness Week. This included blankets, long life milk and canned foods. This is to attempt to raise awareness of the effects of homelessness.

We had members from MASP come to explain and demonstrate the impact of homelessness. This was a very educational session that will have a lasting impact on students.

Special thanks from OLSH Merbein to the members of MASP who came, taught and explained what they do to prevent homelessness.
