Double celebration for undefeated stars

MILDURA City’s official senior S-League title celebrations are under way as both teams completed undefeated campaigns at the weekend.

The senior men’s side secured a 5-2 win over closest rivals Irymple Knights on Friday night to round out the home-and-away season and win a fourth consecutive title, while the women’s side defeated Knights 7-1 on Sunday to win their eighth title in nine seasons.

City got off to the perfect start in Friday’s men’s game with Campbell Brown striking just three minutes in before Brandon Pollifrone doubled the advantage at the nine-minute mark.

Knights striker Jordan Cox reduced the deficit via penalty four minutes later, but Pollifrone’s second and a Nicolas Woods goal before half-time took the sting out of the contest.

Dom Ghidinelli hit City’s fifth and final goal in the 71st minute and while Donald Jerry would add a second for Irymple, the coronation was well under way.

On Sunday, Sophie Lim got City off to a cracking start with two strikes inside the first 16 minutes.

Isabella Palamara would score two of her own and Chenoa Hunter added another to give the champions in waiting a 5-0 lead, before Irymple star Merrinda Hill struck just before half-time.

Lillee Driscoll recorded a second-half brace to confirm the 7-1 result.

Meanwhile, in the other senior men’s contest, Tien Dat Nguyen brought up a second-half hat-trick to power Mildura United to a 4-1 victory over Nichols Point to finish third at the end of the home-and-away season.

Scores were deadlocked at the break, but Pointer Connor O’Callaghan was able to put his side in front just after half-time.

Nguyen however scored twice in the following 15 minutes, before adding another in the final 10, while Rohullah Ataye also found the back of the net as United put the pedal to the metal.

While titles in all grades have been confirmed, finals series and grand final trophies will be on offer over the coming weeks, beginning on Sunday.
