Boinka fire changes direction

AS expected, a bushfire burning on the northern fringe of the Wyperfeld National has altered course with this afternoon’s wind change.

Originally burning about 10 kilometres south of Boinka and heading south through the park, the wind change has forced the flames east towards Patchewollock State Forrest and parallel with the Mallee Highway.

The information comes via the 7.20pm release from Emergency Victoria.

“A wind change has impacted the fire ground that has caused the fire to travel in a north easterly direction,” the release said.

“Conditions can become very dangerous and unpredictable.”

A watch and act alert with a prepare to leave warning is currently in place for Baring, Boinka, Linga, Patchewollock, Torrita, Underbool, Walpeup, Big Desert.

“The bushfire is not yet under control,” the release said. “Firefighters have not been able to stop the fire.

“It is strongly recommended you prepare to leave.”

A relief centre has been opened at Ouyen at Blackburn Park on Farrell Street.

A statement from Emergency Victoria said people evacuating should look to take cash, clothing for three days, medicine for three days, phone and chargers, toiletries, important documents, meaningful items and photos, pet essentials – including leash and carriers.

The fire began on Thursday evening and was placed under the control of Forest Fire Management Victoria with support from Country Fire Authority units from Murrayville, Cowangie, and Underbool.

The fire initially ran through paddocks along the side of Morrison Road before making its way to public land toward Wyperfeld National Park.

Updates on fires across the state can be found via the Emergency Victoria website and smart phone app as well as via emergency broadcasters ABC Local Radio, commercial and designated community radio stations, and/ or Sky News TV.

Saturday 10 January is a day of total fire ban in all regions of Victoria, including the Mallee with the fire danger rating in the Mallee listed as high.

The status of the Linga Airfield, which has been acting as a base for aerial firefighting in the North-West this summer and about five kilometres from the fire front is unclear, with information being sought from authorities.

The next updated on the Boinka is expected at 11.30pm.
