Weightman’s keep perfect season alive

WITH a 6-5 win in round three of the Sunraysia Table Tennis summer pennant Weightman’s Packaging now remain the only undefeated team.

Their narrow win over Mallee Bearings has now stamped them as the team to beat in this short 10 round competition.

Weightman’s skipper Wayne Carmichael has one three singles and is now the only player undefeated.

Carmichael’s four set win over previously undefeated Jackson Tung was highlighted by many long rallies.

Tung was excellent in defence, however Carmichael was still able to get several forehand winners away in a top class contest, Carmichael taking the points 11-5, 8-11, 11-7, 11-8.

Carmichael completed a successful night by taking part in both doubles victories with teammates Russell Walder and Lee Leeson, but he could not do it all by himself and Russell Walder chipped in with a singles victory over Tom Morrison to enable Weightman’s to secure the four points.

The Weightman’s pair of Tung and Liam Wood both won two singles, Wood recovering from a 0-2 deficit against Walder to win in five sets while teammate Tom Morrison won one singles.

It was the lack of success in the doubles which was Weightman’s downfall.

Menahwile and with their team back at full strength Tankard Dental scored a solid 7-4 win over Regional Taxation Services and moved to second place on the ladder at the expense of their opponents.

This was an excellent team effort with Rohan Reimers and first year player Jamie Kealley winning two singles each while Paul Kealley won one.

Tankards proved too good in the doubles winning both including the five set victory by Rohan Reimers and Jamie Kealley over Kate Carmichael and Jason Gifkins 7-11, 11-8, 9-11, 11-6, 13-11.

For RTS Carmichael was in good form winning her three singles. With this loss Regional Taxation Services have dropped to third on the ladder.

Both Choices Flooring Mildura and Cookes Pools & Spas went in to their match yet to score a win and it was Cooke’s who took the points 6-5 in a thriller.

Veteran player Mark Dorman showed the way for Cookes winning two singles and taking part in both the hard-fought doubles victories along with teammates Dylan Wood and Ed Hung.

Early in the contest Dorman was placed under extreme pressure by Choices number two Leon Brown who took a two games to one lead but in a stirring comeback Dorman was able to grab the points 9-11, 12-10, 10-12, 11-5, 11-7.

Cookes took a 4-2 lead before the Choices trio fought back to level the match at five rubbers all.

In an exciting finish both number three’s, Daniel Jansen for Choices and Cooke’s Ed Hung, fought out a lengthy five-setter.

Despite trailing two games to love it was Hung who eventually took control and in an outstanding comeback he went on to win 7-11, 6-11, 11-7, 14-12, 11-4, and in doing so banked his team’s first four points for the season.

For Choices Flooring Mildura skipper Reece Kurrle played well to win three singles including a five set marathon victory over Mark Dorman 11-8, 9-11, 11-9, 7-11, 11-9, while Kurrle’s teammate Leon Brown won two singles.

As in the other two matches, it was the doubles that proved to be the difference.
