Pennant golf under way

PENNANT golf is back under way for the Murray Darling Golf Association, however Division 1 men’s won’t resume until this weekend.

Robinvale had made the jump up a division this season, however Riverside will not be fielding a team, resulting in no round 1 competition in the top grade, which starts with this week’s round 2 at Riverside.

In women’s pennant Coomealla are fielding two teams, resulting in a five-team competition, however in Sunday’s opening round at Red Cliffs it was the home club which got off to a flying start against Riverside.

Their 4-1 victory, with Ruth Cupper, Chris Taylor, Sandra Marwood and Jill Gleeson all securing wins, puts them to the top of the ladder early having won 16 holes.

Lisa Garioch came out on the positive side for Riverside over Julianne Wood.

Meanwhile, Coomealla White secured an opening victory over Mildura 3-2, with four of the matches coming up with 1-up results.

That included wins for Coomealla by Suellen Nunan, Erin Nunan and Lee Bottomley over Tracey Katis, Jenny McCoy and Marg Morrison respectively, as well as Michelle Blair getting the only win for Mildura against Kate Murdoch.

In Division 2 men, Red Cliffs on their home course earned a 3.5-1.5 win.

Jeff Scott’s 1-up victory over Paul Leonard would prove important following the draw between Nomai Pakore and Nathan Lever, as a reversed result could have resulted in a halved match.

Coomealla had a tight win over Merbein 3-2 and while Merbein’s Carlo Longeri earned the biggest win, 4/3 over Jospeh Mosidis, wins to Philip Mosidis, Kane Brown and Luke Perry secured the result for the NSW side.

In Division 3 men’s, Mildura earned a strong 3.5-1.5 win over Coomealla, captain Simon Kelly grabbing the biggest win with a 5/4 victory over Gary McNally.

Red Cliffs defeated Riverside 3.5-1.5 as Rohan Hillier, Jason Plant and Junior Puia all recorded victories while Jake Keil and Steve Forrest halved their contest.

The tightest contest was Robinvale’s 3-2 win over Ouyen.

It was a match that came down to the wire, however, with JJ Natale and Barry Evans winning their respective matches over Rick Boyd and Don Hahnel just 1-up.
