Ouyen United dashed Imperials’ hopes of locking up a finals spot one week early, on a day when Merbein broke through for their first win of the season.
Imps led the City Oval clash by seven points at quarter time, having been helped by a substantial breeze.
When it was the Kangas’ turn to kick with the wind they put the foot down, with a six-goals-to-one second term setting up the 14.4 (88) to 9.4 (58) victory.
Brad Vallance was heavily involved for the victors, kicking four goals, while big man Mark Jamar provided plenty of first-use in the ruck.
Co-coach Andrew Jardine was measured all afternoon in defence.
For Imps, Jarrod McNally kicked 3.3 in a good battle with Ouyen United’s Kale Barker and young defender Matt Mazzini played a key role in keeping Marcus Healy quiet.
Kangas co-coach Luke Nathan was pleased with how his side handled the conditions.
“Winning form’s always good form going into this time of year, so we had a big emphasis on making sure we got over the line,” Nathan said.
“Playing here (at City Oval) too, we take every opportunity we can to play here because that’s where finals are played.”
Imps’ loss sets up an effective early elimination final next week against Irymple at Henshilwood Oval.
The winner progresses to play finals, while the loser is out.
At Kenny Park, Merbein honoured Joe Cavallo’s 200th senior game with a thrilling two-point win over Mildura – 7.4 (46) to 5.14 (44).
Robinvale-Euston did what they needed to do at John James Oval, defeating South Mildura 9.12 (66) to 3.13 (31).
Red Cliffs were 17-point winners against an improving Wentworth outfit at Quandong Park, with 9.9 (63) to 6.10 (46) the final scoreline.
In Sunraysia netball, Ouyen United locked up their place in finals with a 41-30 win against Imperials.
Fifth-placed Wentworth, who needed a percentage booster heading into next week, got just that with an 84-34 win over Red Cliffs.
Their fate still depends on a big win next week against Merbein, who today bounced back to secure a 62-32 win against Mildura.
Ladder leaders South Mildura got the better of Robinvale-Euston 41-36.
