Ladder logjam in women’s cricket

IMPORTANT matches are on the cards for Sunraysia Cricket Association Women’s Division on Friday night, provided forecast rain stays away to allow play to go ahead.

With just 10 points separating third from sixth on the ladder, and three rounds to play before the Christmas break, every win will play a vital role in who plays finals.

Reigning premiers Mildura West will host sixth-placed Coomealla Wentworth at John Hall Oval as they aim to keep their place on top of the table.

Demi Zanoni was outstanding in West’s eight-wicket win over Mildura East last week taking 3/5 from her four overs before adding an unbeaten 31 with the bat.

Tara Martin and Addison Bell were also in good form with the ball taking a couple of wickets each.

Blues captain Katelin Kemp was again in outstanding form despite her side’s loss to Nichols Point Gold, adding another unbeaten 40 to her tally, while Megan Johnston passed 20 for the third time in five innings.

Merbein will host Nichols Point Gold at Chaffey Park as third plays fourth.

An undermanned Magpies outfit went down to Gol Gol last week and will be keen to bounce back.

Despite the seven wicket loss, co-captain Michelle Griffiths claimed two wickets, while top order bats Amy Cupper and Natalie Thomas have been in good form across the season.

Gold moved into the four last week with a 21-run win over Coomealla Wentworth, with Tania and Nancy Kirirua-Gill top scoring with 29 and 26 respectively.

Their fielding work was also impressive, having hands in two run outs in the four dismissals they made.

Fifth-placed Gol Gol will try to move back into the top four when they travel to Mildura Sporting Precinct to face Mildura East.

Emily and Abby Collihole and Teisha Pay all claimed two wickets in the win over Merbein last week, with the former sitting third in the competition wickets tally.

East will target more runs than the 75 they made against West, but Taya Higgins made a solid 16 against a good bowling attack, and Sienna Charles made 14 and took one of the two wickets.

Both Irymple and Nichols Point Green will aim for their second win of the season when they face each other at Henshilwood Oval.

Swallows all-rounder Maya McGregor has been on fire, taking 3/16 in last week’s loss to Mildura Settlers, as well as a run out and during the run chase top scoring with 13.

Green, who had the bye last week, have Sherri Hamence, who is equal third in the wickets tally, while captain Gypsy Gange is always dangerous with bat and ball.

Mildura Settlers, who were led by an unbeaten 51 from Sarah Telfer in the win over Irymple, have the bye.
