Bowls champions to be crowned

THE Bowls Sunraysia playing area Champion of Champions singles crowns are set to be bestowed this weekend.

Coomealla Memorial Sporting Club bowls facility will host the men’s and women’s tournaments to determine who is the best of the best from across the region.

All male and female club singles champion winners earn the opportunity to compete, with the overall winners to qualify for the Mallee Murray region finals and the opportunity to push their way into the Victorian state championships.

In the women’s draw, Red Cliffs’ Carolyn Coles is out to win her second successive Champion of Champions title after defeating Coomealla’s Delwyn Milner in last year’s final.

Coles’ round 1 match comes against Workers’ Joy Stevens, while Milner, who has been runner-up for the past two years, will look to advance when she faces Wentworth’s Nicole White.

Previous event winners Judy Osborne (Mildura) and Janet Vallence (Ouyen) will also look to reclaim the title when they face Lynette Milwood (Irymple) and Jennifer Wakefield (Underbool) in their respective opening games.

In the men’s draw, just three first round matches will take place as a new winner will be crowned, including multiple-time champion Glenn Scott of Euston beginning his quest for a sixth title.

He takes on Brian Horton of Workers in his opening match, while Merbein’s Shawn Fullerton faces Red Cliffs’ Bruce Harford and Adrian Barko of Coomealla takes on Irymple’s Mick Legin.

Two of those winners will face each other in the semi-finals, while the other will take on Ray Gloster of Underbool after his opening round bye.

Wentworth’s Ivan Beshmann and Mildura’s Chris Mitchell, and Ouyen’s Norm Latta and Nangiloc’s Toby Moore will clash in the other semi-finals after also having byes.

Action begins at 9am on Saturday at Coomealla Memorial Sporting Club bowls facility.
