Film review: Once Upon a Time in Hollywood

By Sydnie Kendall

MA 15+

Genre: Comedy

Directed by: Quintin Tarantino

Cast: Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie

ONCE Upon A Time In Hollywood follows Hollywood front man actor Rick Dalton and his stunt double Cliff Booth as they attempt to maintain their position in the film industry during the end of Hollywood’s Golden age of cinema.

Once Upon A Time in Hollywood is a movie about the city, humanity and most of all the movies.

The film unfolds in classic Tarantino style and at times it feels that he is too caught up in his own style to add anything new to the table.
But don’t be alarmed!

There is plot and narrative which slowly uncoils to reveal a deeper truth.

The writing, as always, is incredibly funny and intuitive. It’s not a film that you have to over analyse. It exists as an enjoyable piece of work and it honestly is one of his better films.

Once Upon a Time will mark the beginning of Pitt and DiCaprio’s partnership.

The pair work well together, I’d be surprised if the next 10 years didn’t see them side by side on screen. They are surely Hollywood’s next it couple.

The thing about OUATIH is that there is so much joy. So much.

Despite dealing with some heavy subject materials, there is a sense of satisfaction and happiness that play out between Rick and Cliff.

It could be said that Tarantino has made a love ode to LA.

He takes care of the era city with an eye of romanticism and it’s pretty spectacular watching it unfold.

Now, the world will hold their breath in hope that this won’t be the last time we see Tarantino’s name on the silver screen.

To sum up: A highly enjoyable, funny and glamorous film. Not to be missed!
