Mildura Settlers captain backs SCA format move

MILDURA Settlers captain Braidyn Turner has thrown his support behind the Sunraysia Cricket Association’s decision to play more one-day fixtures this season.

The new SCA board has made a number of changes to the formatting for the new season, which hits off this Saturday in a hope of revitalising the competition.

Turner believes the new initiatives will benefit the game and hopefully create more interest.

“I actually think it is a bit long overdue,” Turner said.

“We have had the same format for a long time where we have just one and two-day games where other associations have probably moved away from this.

“I think we are probably now a bit like Swan Hill – I know Swan Hill has had a one-day final and then played their two-day correct.

“So we are sort of now catching up to everyone else.

“I like it obviously because I like one-day cricket.

“It just means you are not out in the field for more than 40 overs – I think it will be a good change.”

With one of the strongest one-day sides in the SCA, the change to more one-day fixtures is expected to benefit Settlers.

But Turner is aware they still need to execute their game plan if they are to be successful.

“Obviously with Jason (Morrison) at the top of the order and Mark (Cleary) returning I think it will help us a little bit,” Turner said on Monday morning.

“You have to execute, you can’t just think because you have some good one-day players in your side it is going to happen.

“You still have to deliver … go out there and make runs and take wickets, but I do think it will be good for us and for the whole competition.”
