Big step up for netballer Avalon Williams

MILDURA teenager Avalon Williams will make a huge step up as she has signed a 2020 contract with the under-19 Victorian Netball League (VNL).

Avalon has been playing netball since the age of nine and was “excited and nervous” about the contract as a defender with Melbourne-based Boroondara Express.

Louise Williams, Avalon’s mother ,said she was pretty impressed that the 15-year-old would be playing up in the under 19 league.

“She has been selected for the Victorian Netball League in the U19s team and she’s only 15, so it’s pretty good,” Ms Williams said.

“It’s good that she’s a country kid that is getting a run in the city.”

In order to be selected for the VNL, Avalon had to go through a pre-screening process, which was followed by three more knockout trials.

“Once she did the pre-screening she went through three separate trials to be selected,” her mother said.

“With each of those trials, they are knocking kids out.”

Avalon will attend a boarding school in Melbourne to accommodate the change, and will start training for the pre-season in November.

Louise said Avalon isn’t the sort of kid who will go flaunting it around, as she prefers to stay out of the spotlight.

“She is super excited, but she is that sort of kid who doesn’t want any attention, so she just gets on and does what she needs to do on the court.”
