Jason Modica outlines mayoral plans

DEPUTY Mayor Jason Modica has vowed to bring a listening ear and open mind to the Mildura mayor role he will contest next month.

Cr Modica joined Mildura Council three years ago, where he has served two terms as deputy mayor and heads the arts and culture portfolio.

More recently, Cr Modica ran in the 2019 federal election campaign, which saw him finishing fourth.

But standing for the mayor was not something he initially envisaged.

“Initially, no. But after completing two terms as deputy mayor under two different styles of leadership, and participating in the Federal election campaign earlier this year, I feel I have completed a local government apprenticeship,” Cr Modica said.

“With the support of my colleagues and council staff, I am ready to put myself forward for this role.”

Cr Min Poole confirmed she would also contest the mayoral position alongside Cr Modica at November’s special council meeting.

Advocating community-centred issues and projects was top priority for Cr Modica if he were to become the next mayor.

“I’m passionate about creating and maintaining strong working relationships in the chamber and on the street, and would relish the opportunity to support councillors, staff and community to pursue projects of importance,” he said.

“Naturally, the continuation toward completion of the Mildura Future Ready projects is a major focus, as is the ongoing support for drought relief.

“Personally, in or out of the mayoral role, I will be keeping the focus on the economic, environmental and social benefits of energy transition to renewables for our municipality, and water security for our community and industry.”
