Rising soccer star off to junior tournament in Fiji

RISING soccer star Macaila Britton is a 13-year-old girl with big ambitions.

The Mildura City Soccer Club player hopes one day to pull on a Matilda’s shirt and represent Australia.

“This is the furthest I have ever been in soccer and I just hope I play well enough to get noticed in Fiji and I might get an opportunity to go to Melbourne and South Australia to play and hopefully go on from there,” Britton said.

While a spot in the Matil­das’ line-up is still a fair way off, she is on the right path, having recently been ­selected to represent Australia in a junior tournament in Fiji.

Britton, who plays centre defence, will travel to the south Pacific island next month where she hopes to improve her game.

“Hopefully I can become a lot more skillful and and get a lot more understanding of the game,” said Britton.

“There is going to be coaches from all around the world so hopefully I can get a lot of advice from them which is going to help my game.

“Hopefully when I come back I will be playing differently and better.”

Among the teams Britton will compete against during her time in Fiji are China, the United States and the United Kingdom.
