Herrick tribute game is growing stronger

RED Cliffs Cricket Association (RCCA) won a close contest against Mildura East in the annual Josh Herrick tribute match at Quandong Park on Sunday.

Chasing 85 for victory, Red Cliffs reached their target in the 18th over with four wickets to spare.

Red Cliff’s Brady Moore was the star of the day taking 4/8, his effort earning him player of the match.

The match is played in memory of former cricketer Josh Herrick, who died in May 2010 after a 17-month fight against osteosarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer.

This year the match was held in conjunction with the South West Cricket Club-led Pink Stumps Day, raising funds for the McGrath Foundation.

Paul Herrick, Josh’s father, said Sunday’s game was played in great spirit and was pleased to see the money raised go to a worthy cause.

“Everyone always gets behind the game and really supports it,” Herrick said.

“This year we were able to raise a bit of money for the McGrath Foundation, which was great.

“It’s great to honour Josh, but to also help such a worthy cause.”

Sunday’s game was the 10th time the match has been played and Herrick said it gets bigger every year.

“We always have plenty of players put their hand up to play,” Herrick said.

“They all get a shirt and they wear that with pride for the next 12 months.”

In the under-14 match, which was played as a curtain raiser, Red Cliffs had a big win.

Chasing 65 for victory they scored 4/120 with Jack Wisneske picking up player of the match for his 1/7 and 21 not out.
