New to Mildura, Danielle Meddemmen went on a quest to find a bunch of great things to do. She has included a list of some of her favourite finds since she moved to the region.
MOVING to a regional town as a born and bred city slicker was unfamiliar territory for me.
Coming from a capital city, I was lucky enough to know that if I found myself with no plans on any given day, I was guaranteed to find something going on.
I thought moving to Mildura would mean a mundane country lifestyle, where everyone moved at the pace of snails and had absolutely nowhere to be.
What’s worse is that I had friends visiting me three months into my move and scrambled frantically to work colleagues and locals for recommendations on how to keep them entertained – how ignorant was I?
Trendy capital cities may get a wrap on social media, but Sunraysia is just as beautiful, and photo worthy, as any of the capital cities in my opinion – so I have put together an Instagram tour of its highlights.
This is a collection of just a few of the activities my friends and I did over the weekend they were here.
Keeping foodies happy
MELBOURNE may have the reputation for the best restaurants in Australia, but I would argue Mildura gives it a run for its money.
There is no shortage of restaurants and cuisines here in Sunraysia, and you don’t have to look very far to get a quality meal for breakfast, lunch or dinner.
I took my friends to one of my favourite brekkie joints in town, and it didn’t disappoint.
The Riverfront
BY far my most favourite part of this town is the riverfront.
The long stretch of path along the Murray River makes for a beautiful walk and the cafes and coffee vans along the river bank make for an easy spot to pull up or grab something for the trip.
I could barely wait to show my friends this part of town, and we made various trips to the picturesque location.
By far my favourite was taking some snacks and a picnic rug and setting up a spot on the grass.
Wine to go with dine
THERE’S no better pairing than a good view and a bottle of wine, or two.
The region has a number of wineries and cellar doors to choose from, some of which offer an excellent view and selection of food to pair with a vino.
There is vast a selection of red and white wine grown locally, so whether you fancy sitting out at a winery or grabbing a bottle to go, the district has you covered.
Swim spots
In my mind, there is nothing better than a river swim – which led to major disappointment when blue-green algae made it a no-go while I had visitors.
However, I would argue Sunraysia has some of the greatest outdoor pool facilities I have seen.
With multiple options from Red Cliffs to Merbein and further, I don’t think there is any doubt there is no shortage of places to go on one of the region’s scorching summer days.
