Sunraysia settles its Country Week squad

THE Sunraysia Cricket Association will have plenty of batting depth for their 2020 Melbourne Country Week campaign.

Nichols Point coach Shaun Mathews is heading the association’s return to representative cricket and is one of a host of batsmen selected in the 14-man squad.

He is joined by clubmates Brad Thomas and Glen Bridson, Settlers’ Richie Wyld, Braidyn Turner and Paddy Keogh, Mildura East’s Josh Berry and Merbein South’s Josh Carmichael and Hamim Miah as key men with the willow for Sunraysia.

Workers Gol Gol’s Jake Albrecht and Coomealla Wentworth’s Bevan Wade are handy with bat and ball – bowling medium pace, while Daniel Chapman (Nichols Point), Locke Thornton (Mildura West) and Brak Zambelli (Settlers) look set to lead the bowling attack.

Mildura West import Aaron Feroz is in the side as a dedicated spin bowler, with Wyld, Mathews and Thomas all able to provide another spin option.

“We are very excited to get back down to Melbourne, a big thank you to the SCA board and the players who committed for getting it back up and running,” Mathews said.

“Our aim is to try get back up to Division 2, Hopefully we can have a couple of wins and end up in the final.”

The SCA is in Division 3 of Melbourne Country Week and faces Hamilton District in their first match on February 17.

They then play Bellarine Peninsula Cricket Association on February 18 and South West Cricket Association on February 19 for their final minor round game.

The semi-finals are on February 19 with the final on February 20.
