New Mildura vets getting to know the animals

MILDURA Veterinary Hospital has four new graduate recruits.

The group, labelled the “fab four new grads” have come on board from the University of Adelaide for their first year of veterinarian work.

Nat Smith, Krysten Lee, Sebastian Stachurski and Soohi Lee all completed placements through the Mildura Veterinary Hospital during their study and were welcomed back to start work this year.

Mr Smith is originally from Red Cliffs, completing his schooling in Sunraysia before moving away for university, while the other three have grown up and studied in Adelaide.

Mr Stachurski said his first impressions of Mildura were pretty good — minus the dust storms.

“There was a huge dust storm on the way here so that was pretty interesting,” he said.

“Mildura is a fairly big regional town and it’s cool that it’s so close to NSW and Adelaide.”

The hospital has taken on three graduates in one go previously, but four is its largest intake.

Krysten Lee said working in a regional clinic as opposed to a metropolitan clinic was a really beneficial way to start a veterinary career.

“We just see so much here,” she said.

“We do a bit of everything and we are so far away from any referrals so we have to do it all.”

The new graduates would get to experience all aspects of veterinary medicine during their time with the clinic, but said they all had specific interests for the long term.

“I am really hoping to focus on smaller animals,” Soohi Lee said.

“I have been doing a lot of the larger animals stuff at the moment but we are all in the same boat with trying a bit of everything,” Mr Smith said.
