Squash courts new players

MILDURA Squash Club is taking last-minute entries for its 2025 autumn pennant, which starts next week.

The club hosts three 12-week pennants during the year at Mildura Sporting Precinct, spanning autumn, winter and spring.

They are played across two divisions on Wednesday and Thursday nights, and the club provides training sessions and come-and-try days every Monday, and a juniors session every Sunday during the school term.

A casual racquetball training session is also held every Tuesday night at the MSP courts.

Mildura Squash Club president Kevin Healy said squash was a sport open to all skill levels, and once people tried it, they were hooked.

“Squash is a fast-paced and exciting sport, which is fun at all levels of play,” Mr Healy said.

“It’s great for developing hand-eye co-ordination, spatial awareness, and boosting overall fitness.

“Most importantly it gets the blood pumping, it keeps people active, and is a great regular social outing for those who join in on the pennant.”

Squash is both an individual and a team game during the pennant fixture, as a person plays against a single opponent on the court, and their results are counted as part of an overall team.

In 2028, squash is set to make its official Olympic Games debut in Los Angeles alongside flag football, and the return of baseball, softball, cricket and lacrosse.

“That will be great exposure for the sport, but ideally we’d like to see our numbers begin to pick up now,” Mr Healy said.

“We’ve got experienced players here at the club who can teach newcomers, and we can lend new players a ball and a racquet as they start to get a feel for the game.”

Squash will be unaffected by ongoing repairs to the main stadium courts at Mildura Sporting Precinct during April, May and June.

A masters tournament will also be run in Mildura between February 14 and 16, marking the first squash tournament held at the MSP.

The event is open to players over the age of 35, and about 80 players will take part in a mixed graded event, using either a triple-plate or round-robin draw, depending on the amount of entries.

The club is also hosting an annual general meeting on Thursday from 7pm at the MSP squash courts.

Entries for the coming pennant close on Sunday.

People interested in trying out the sport, or signing up to a pennant, are urged to contact the Mildura Squash Facebook page, or message 0439 357 327.
