SUNRAYSIA radio breakfast duo Amy Hegedus and Dave Anderson have created a Change.org petition with the goal of bringing Uber to Mildura.
The Hit99.5 pair created the petition last week off the back of news that Ola was launching a ride sharing service in Horsham.
So far it has amassed more than 500 signatures.
But Hegedus and Anderson want the petition to gain at least 600 signatures, “which is 2 per cent of the Mildura population and that then will hopefully be enough of an incentive to go to Uber and say, hey, we need to make this happen,” Hegedus said.
“People want it, there’s a demand for it.”
Anderson said having the ride-sharing service in Mildura would help boost jobs, with local people being able to gain work as Uber drivers.
“It works so successfully in so many other places and they have pretty strict criminal and background checks as well, which allays a lot of the fears people might have around it,” he said.
The pair also believe an Uber service would not be a threat to Mildura’s current taxi industry.
“I don’t think it would be an issues because it’s worked in other areas, I think it works alongside it,” Hegedus said.
“Adding extra options means that there’s less people having to wait around, when a lot of problems that happen when you go out occur,” Anderson said.
“I definitely don’t think there’s any harm in having extra options for people to get home.”
Uber is available in 37 Australian cities and last year was launched in Horsham and Shepparton.
Sunraysia Daily reported last month that Uber had no immediate plans to launch in Mildura.
Hegedus and Anderson believe there is a chance Uber could come to Mildura if enough people want it.
“Next week will be us getting in contact with them,” Hegedus said.
