Mildura Grand Tennis International main draw pending

THE main draw for the Mildura Grand Tennis International will be revealed at 6pm on Monday in the Mildura Lawn Tennis Club courtside marquee.

Qualifying for the tournament continues Monday from 10am.

Mildura’s Xavier Kendall was in action on Sunday but fell 6-0, 6-1 to New South Welshman Tomislav Edward Papac in just over an hour.

Kendall, 17, had his chances against his hard-hitting 24-year-old opponent but in the end experience won out, with Papac progressing to the next round of qualifiers.

The main draw begins on Tuesday.

Dayne Kelly and Arina Rodionova headline the respective men’s and women’s singles fields.

Sunbury’s Kelly – always a popular player at the tournament – is out to defend his 2019 title and win a fourth Mildura event after taking out the title in 2016 and 2017.

World No.154 Rodionova, who made the second round of this year’s Australian Open after gaining entry to the tournament as a wildcard, returns after being the top seed in 2017 but losing in the second round to that year’s eventual champion, Gabriella Taylor.

Defending women’s champion Naiktha Bains is back to defend her women’s singles title.

Also at the tournament will be South Australian Luke Saville, who with Max Purcell was runner-up in the doubles at the 2020 Australian Open.

Singles play runs until Sunday, with the finals from noon on centre court, while the doubles finals will be held on Saturday afternoon.
