COOMEALLA

WEDNESDAY’S men’s Stableford A Grade winner was Barry Waters (41 points). Runner-up was Darren Murnane (39) and third went to Stephen Enright (38).

The B Grade winner was Chris Gurney (39) over runner-up Neil Saunders (37) and Tim Nunan (36).

NTPs were: Waters (third, 750), Larry Frasca (seventh, 201), Andrew Rix (11th, 118, and 18th, 75).

The ladies’ Stableford winner was Robyn Rohrlach (38). Runner-up was Ann Bowen (37).

NTP weres: Ninette Mammone (third, 46), Janice Walker (seventh, 1520, and 11th, 180) and Lee Bottomley (18th, 20).

Friday’s medley 12-hole President’s Port winner was Howard Jones (23) over David Baldock (22).

NTPs were: Walter Schulz (seventh, 225) and Gary Thomas (11th, 150).

Saturday’s men’s Stableford A Grade winner was Justin McPhee (37) ahead of Cameron Stewart (37) and Alan Scorer (36).

The B Grade victor was Greg Cooke (39). Runner-up was Thorell Lees (36) and third was Ron Lyell (35).

The C Grade winner was John Blake (39). Runner-up Peter Dooley (39) and third was Tim Nunan (38).

NTPs were: Craig Gursansky (third, 275), Cooke (seventh, 108), David Lewin (11th, 275) and Thorell Lees (18th, 55).

The ladies’ Stableford winner was Kylie Walters (36) over Heidi Shultz (35).

NTPs were: Nia Whittle (third, birdie), Ann Bowen (seventh, 230), Margaret Midgley (11th, 55) and Robyn Rohrlach (18th, 38).

On Sunday, the Golf Victoria 4BBB Championship qualifying round was played at Coomealla with 26 pairs entering the Stableford competition.

The winning women’s team was Heather Hogan (Birchip) and Mary-Anne Davis (Murray Downs) with 41 points. Runners-up were Deanne Davis and Sue Johns (35) and third went to Mandy Male (Donald) and Dianne Johnston (Boort) with 29.

The men’s winning team was Matthew Mason and Bernard Rigby (Coomealla) with 45. Runnesr-up were Josef and Phil Moisidis (Coomealla) with 45 and third went to Justin Freeman and David Hancock (Coomealla) with 43.

The mixed team winners were Grant and Emmalee Begs (Mildura) with 46 points ahead of runners-up Sue Laird (Commonwealth) and James Orpwood (Rosebud) on countback.

MILDURA

THE winning roll continues for Ruth Rodi, with the top score again in the Tuesday’s ladies’ Stableford.

Her 41 points gained her a narrow victory over runner-up Glenys Anderson (40).

NTPs were: Margaret McGlashan (second, 162) and Sandra Hutchinson (12th, 375).

Wednesday was a Stableford event in two grades and the overall best score was 41 points from A Grade winner Ron Rowse with runner-up James Hancock a few points behind on 38 and Boof Ferguson next on 35.

A close contest in B Grade resulted in a win for Frank Poole (38). Steve Peters (37) was second on countback over Nathan Willis.

NTPs were: Graeme Polkinghorn (first, 102), Robert Briggs (second, 46) and Keith Williams (12th, (121). Lachlan Cottrell won the daily pig pin prize.

Last week’s Friday nine-hole twilight competition winner was Frank Tippett (21) with Ferdi Bergamin runner-up (20).

Saturday’s 4BBB Stableford was played in excellent conditions with members from Swan Hill joining the field and also taking home a bundle of prizes.

The winning team, on 48 points, was David Murray and Bob Bettess, followed by Andy Stanbrook and Ross Williams (47) and Stephen Pongrac and Andrew Keogh (45).

The ladies’ winners were Rosie Fiearra and Janett Tucker (Swan Hill) with 44 points.

NTPs were: Shay Toma (first, 132), David Murray (second, 700), Jeff Lay (10th, 319) and Terry Buckingham (12th, 234). The highlight of the day was an eagle for Robert Young on the par-four ninth.

NTPs for the ladies: Rhonda Young (first, (396), Rosie Fiearra (10th, 100) and Val Hedwards (12th,  (76). Lynn Merrett won the pig pin prize on the second (700).

A medley Stableford was played on Sunday and the winner on a three-way countback was Joe Morrison (37). Then came Craig Tung and Kane Cameron.

RED CLIFFS

ON Wednesday Sally Jones returned to the winners’ list, claiming the A Grade medley Stableford with 35 points.

Neil Rogerson revelled in the sometimes windy conditions, scoring 40 points to easily win B Grade from Russell Walsh (35).

NTPs were: Graeme Duffy and Jones (eighth), Keith Rogers (12th), Margaret Stanbrook (15th), Rogerson (17th) and Deb Hassell (18th).

In Saturday’s medley Stableford, Jones maintained her winning streak with +4 to win A Grade from Bob Merlin on +3. In B Grade, Brett Overton was the winner with a brilliant +5 from Lea Walmsley (+3).

NTPs were: Jeffrey Scott (third), Daryl Morgan (fifth), Bobbie Ramsay and Brad Morgan (eighth),  Scott (ninth), Liz Leach and Walter Graham (12th),  Stuart Thomson (17th) and Ian Mitchell (18th).
Coming events: Today: Opening day of 2020 season with ladies and men playing Stableford. Saturday: Medley Stableford. Monday: Open mixed American foursomes.

VETERANS

ON Monday a very good field of 62 contested the opening event of the district veteran golfers association.

Held at the Mildura Golf Resort on the lush newly completed course, pairs competed in a 4BBB par game.

It was great to have new members join the association. Peter Brady, Grant Giddings, Ned Klemm, David Lloyd and Dennis Murray were welcomed by president Kevin Jones. Paul Reed, from Port Arlington, joined the field as a guest.

The winning team, with an impressive +8, was John Green and Terry Buckingham.

Runners-up on countback were Cliff Ferguson and Frank Tippett.

NTPs were: Eric Jenner (second), Greg King (10th) and Geoff Cameron (12th).

Thanks to the generosity of the sponsor, the two teams with the lowest scores received some valued merchandise.

Brian Murphy and Bruce Mathieson along with Rod Gray and Peter Knight received a pillow each in recognition of the fact they probably should have stayed home in bed.

The association’s Ouyen contingent was recognised for its determination to make it to the course on time by overcoming a road hazard. It had to make a detour to ensure it was able to compete.

Joe Mitchell and Kevin Jones accepted gifts in recognition of their efforts.

It was a great start to the year for the association and organisers look forward to having big fields and successful competitions throughout the year.

The next event will be held at Red Cliffs on April 6. It will be a single Stableford competition.

RIVERSIDE

ON Monday of last week Jerry Stephens smashed out a 40-point winning score in the Veteran and Friends comp in front of Alec Cattanach, who had an impressive 38.

NTPs were: John Wass (seventh, 890) and Rob Arnold (18th, 420).

The women’s nine-hole Stableford on Tuesday needed a three-way countback to determine the placings.

Pat Riordan has been playing some very consistent golf of late and came out the better to win, with Val Easterbrook runner-up and Meg Hamence just missing the cut, all on 18 points.

NTPs were: Maeve Fraser (12th, 800) and Riordan (18th, 5).

The men’s A Grade on Wednesday was split by a countback as well, with Dale Meredith winning over Andrew Hill, both on 38.

John Orange was pleased with his win in B Grade after a great round of 39, followed by Graham Sievewright (38).

NTPs were: Graeme Southwell (fourth, 490), Alec Cattanach (seventh, 350), Ian Fleming (12th, 690), Andrew Hill (17th, 110) and Paul Danenberg (18th 155).

It was par for the women’s game on Thursday and Gaye Briggs put together a winning round of (+1).

Chitra Rankin and Jen Leach had a friendly battle for second after they both finished square. Rankin came out with the best back nine and collected runner-up.

NTPs were: Jenny Stephenson (fourth, 365),  Rankin (12th, 62) and Verna Wakefield (18th, a birdie).

The nine-hole medley Stableford on Friday is growing every week and 42 players hit the fairways last week.

Peter Schroeder and Mr Consistent, Rob Arnold, finished on 20 points, with Schroeder taking the win.

NTPs were: Hayden Shepherd (10th and 16th), Brad Winslow (14th) and Bodan Bishop (18th).

The comp for the women on Saturday was stroke and Nora Paech played a nice game to win with (95-73) in front of Maree Irvin (103-74).

NTPs were: Wendy Dawson (fourth, 750), May Connolly (12th, 210) and Lyn Thompson (18th, 235).

The monthly medal contested on Saturday for the men was played in three grades, with some exceptional scores produced.

Steve Wilmann had a great score in A Grade playing off scratch; his 69 off the stick was an absolute winner.

Chris O’Brien’s excellent 81-71 gave him second over Brad Steer (75-73). 

Michael Holcroft just missed the placings after his 81-73.

Tony Coppola was on fire in B Grade, winning with a sensational 84-68, followed by Darren Gray (80-69). Trevor Williams (83-72) was third after a countback against Reece Godfrey (85-72).

Another fantastic round was produced by Barry Martin in C Grade (87-68) for his win.

Second went to Chris Curley (89-70) over Paul Graham (92-72).

NTPs were: Rob Arnold (fourth, 380), Holcroft (seventh, 280), Paul Reed (12th, 80) and Craig Douglass (18th, 471).

Sunday’s medley Stableford saw Dale Meredith win a countback from George Nicholas with sizzling 40 points from both.

Although not picking up the win, Nicholas did collect an eagle along the way on the par-five second.

NTPs were: Brendan Gove (fourth, 370), Paul Danenberg (seventh, 570) and Andrew Diwell (18th). 

Ladies’ opening day tomorrow will be 3BBB Stableford with a shotgun start at 8.30am. Players, please bring a plate of finger food (0-26 sweets and 7-45 savoury).
