Mildura to host climate change public hearing

A PUBLIC hearing into climate change will be held in Mildura on Thursday as part of a parliamentary inquiry.

The Legislative Assembly’s Environment and Planning Committee will be held at Mildura Council from 10am, with councillor Jason Modica to speak alongside environmental sustainability co-ordinator Jay Smith.

Committee chair Darren Cheeseman said they hoped to learn about climate change mitigation strategies in Mildura as part of the hearing.

“We have spoken with a range of communities across Victoria over the past several months and this is the chance for us to hear about local initiatives and ideas from among the Mildura community,” he said.

“We’re keen to learn about some of the work already underway to mitigate climate change and to find out how government can best support local efforts.”

The founder of 350 Mallee Climate Action Group Emma Walmsley will present from 11.40am, followed by the chief executive of Mallee Regional Innovation Centre.

After the hearing is finished, the committee will visit the NRMA electric vehicle fast charging station and the Mildura Eco Village.

“An important aspect of this inquiry is seeing firsthand the innovation that is happening in regional Victoria and to learn whether local initiatives can have broader application in other parts of our state,” Mr Cheeseman said.

The public hearing will be held from 10am-1.15pm at the council’s Deakin Avenue service centre.

A copy of the full schedule for the day can be found on the committee’s website, along with submissions received and transcripts from some of the earlier hearings.
