Min Poole will not contest Mildura council election

MILDURA Deputy Mayor Min Poole has announced she will not contest this year’s council elections.

Cr Poole, nearing the end of her first term on the council, was the fourth person elected at the 2016 election.

“With the upcoming council election I have made the difficult decision not to renominate,” Cr Poole said in a statement.

“For 25 years I’ve happily juggled two jobs simultaneously in addition to community roles and various studies.

“Now I’m calling time out, planning weekends off to recharge myself.”

Cr Poole listed several achievements from her term that she was proud of, including advocating mental health services and improved water management, helping launch Mildura Future Ready and the Reconciliation Action Plan, and campaigning against domestic violence and farmland planning restrictions.

Providing support and resources for recovery from severe storms, drought, sand drift and COVID-19 were also mentioned.

Cr Poole’s plans suggest only one of the top six candidates from the 2016 poll would be featured on this year’s ballot, with Glenn Milne (first elected) indicating he would recontest.

Ali Cupper (second) and Max Thorburn (sixth) were replaced during the term, while Simon Clemence (third) and Greg Brown (fifth) have said they will not stand again.

Victoria’s Local Government Minister announced on Wednesday that local government elections would go ahead in October.
