Kevin fights tonight

Mildura’s Kevin Hogarth will carry Australia’s last chance of winning an Olympic boxing medal when he steps into the ring tonight for his semi-final bout against Irish welterweight, Fred Tiedt.

Hogarth the “boy from the bush” who was given little hope of getting through the elimination rounds, let alone going on to the semi-finals, will enter the ring at 7.30 pm.

His will be the first bout of the semi-final series to be held at West Melbourne on the night program.

Other semi-finals will be held during the afternoon.

Hogarth was left as Australia’s lone representative in the boxing when the light heavyweight hope, Tony Madigan, of Sydney, was outpointed in his quarter final by the Russian Murao Uskas.

If Hogarth wins tonight, he will fight for the gold medal tomorrow night.
