Pooncarie to Menindee Road to be sealed

THE long-awaited sealing of the Pooncarie to Menindee Road is expected to be completed by mid-2022 under the Federal Government’s COVID-19 economic recovery plan.

The Australian and New South Wales governments will each contribute $4.6 million towards the project with works in the Wentworth Shire expected to get under way in the first half of next year.

Work to upgrade the road has already begun in the Central Darling Shire Council, but there had been some uncertainty about funding for the upgrade in the Wentworth Local Government Area.

Those works are expected to get under way in the first half of next year.

The project is expected to support 15 direct and indirect jobs, based on Australian Government estimates.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison said Tuesday’s Federal Budget would deliver funding for infrastructure which supports the Government’s JobMaker plan and help New South Wales recover from COVID-19.

“We have been working closely with state and territory governments to invest in the infrastructure that is ready to go and can help rebuild our economy and create more jobs,” Mr Morrison said.

“These projects will keep commuters safe on the road, get people home to their loved ones sooner and provide better transport links for urban and regional communities,” he said.

“As part of the COVID-19 economic recovery plan we have invested an additional $5 billion focused on shovel-ready projects across the state.”
