COOMEALLA Wentworth skipper Justin Freeman says his team is up for the fight this weekend against Sunraysia Cricket Association flag fancies Irymple.
Coming off a stirring last-ball win last weekend against New South Wales rivals Workers Gol Gol, Freeman said the Blues were ready to take on another big task.
“(It’s) going to be a huge challenge for us,” he said.
“But if we can execute the plans that we have in place for teams and players then I think we will be competitive and have another close game on our hands.”
But this time last week many would have written-off Coomealla Wentworth against last year’s runners-up Workers Gol Gol.
Freeman said that result gave his side momentum and the knowledge that when the whips crack they can pull through.
“It is a massive confidence booster, as well as a bit of reassurance that we can get the job done in a close game like that,” Freeman said.
Matt Job, 21, was integral for his side, playing the match-winning knock.
Job came in with the Blues 3/90 in the 34th over and still 56 runs short of Workers Gol Gol’s 146.
His 35 not out off 21 balls – five of those off the last three balls – clinched victory for his side and came after the Blues had struggled to get Workers Gol Gol’s bowlers away at times.
Freeman said it was reward for effort from the rising star.
“It was unbelievable to see, no one trains harder than what Matt does,” Freeman said.
“It is just great to see some reward for all of the effort he puts in. I think we will see a few good knocks from him this year.”
Coomealla Wentworth have been boosted by the availability of Kobe Smith, who is back in the district from Melbourne where he plays Premier Cricket.
Smith will be playing for the Blues until he can relocate back to Melbourne due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
