MILDURA

Competition golf resumed at Mildura Golf Club on Thursday 18 February with a stableford competition enjoyed by 41 players.

The winner was Ray Quirk with 39 points, second was Rob Toms on 36 points and third was Geoffrey Hazeldine on 35 points.

Ten players with scores of 33 points or better won a golf ball.

Nearest the pin prizes went to Joe Rocca for the second hole with 550 cm), Geoff Hazeldine on the 10th hole with 230cm and Rob Toms on the 12th hole with 44cm.

The nine hole stableford competition on Friday 19 February was won by Kane Cameron who had 23 points, Josh Mcaskill came second with 22 points, Tomas Floyd also had 22 points and veteran Frank Tippett was third on 15 points.

The competition on Saturday 20 February was a men’s single stableford in three grades.

Geoff Hazeldine continued his good form to win A-grade with 40 points, second was Neville Hodgetts on 39 points and Kane Cameron took third place in A-grade with 39 points.

B-grade was won by Simon Kelly with 38 points, from Les Williams and Stephen Reberger both on 37 points.

James Pippin won C-grade on 39 points, Lachlan Crouch had 37 points for second place and Ian Nimon was third on 36 points.

27 players with scores of 35 points or better won a golf ball each.

The nearest the pin prizes were won by Rod Ford on the first hole with 198cm, Gary Fumberger on the second hole with 170cm (which also took the car wash and pig prizes) and Robert Briggs aced the 12th hole to win the bottle of wine.

The Mildura veteran men’s stableford competition on Monday 22 February attracted 19 players and was won by Steve Peters who scored 38 points, second was Milton Clarke on 35 points and Peter

Dooley scored 33 points to finish in third place.

MERBEIN

Merbein held the first two rounds of the 2020 Club Championship last weekend after it was delayed last year due to COVID-19.

The first two rounds saw some great golf including an eagle to Dave Timms on Sunday.

The shot of the week went to Michael Thomson on Saturday with a hole-in-one on the eighth hole, which was the first on the eighth since 1968 and a first for Michael.

The monthly medal was coupled with round one, then taken out by Max Turvey over Michael Thomson via countback, both finishing on 69.

Sunday saw Shane Trinnick comfortably take out the day with a 68 to get the win.

Paul Hollingworth came in with 72 to take runner-up.

Saturday winner was Max Turvey (86/69) and runner-up was Michael Thomson (71/69).

Nearest the pin were S. Trinnick on second with 310cm, M. Dean on third with 78cm, M. Thomson on eighth with 0cm, A. Lee on 12th with 220cm, R. Teasedale on 14th with 220cm, S. Trinnick on 16th with 300cm and M. Wilkes on 18th with 700cm.

Sunday winner was Shane Trinnick (78/68) and runner-up was Paul Hollingsworth (88/72).

Nearest the pin were K. Matulick on third with 285cm, M. Thomson on eighth with 640cm, S. Trinnick on 14th with 490cm and M. Thomson on 18th with 35cm.

WENTWORTH

Veteran Ron Moore won Thursday’s competition with 34 points.

Runner-up “where’s my cream bun” John “it’s in the tank” Stephens scored 32 points.

Ball winner was Bill Murray on 30 points.

“Mr Risky” Ged Chapman scored 22 points.

Tom Clark continued his improvement at Sunday’s stroke round and won with 74 nett.

Runner-up went to the tennis watching Howard Hankinson at 75 nett.

Ball-winners were Col Stewart with 75 nett and Garry Bourke 75 nett.

Nearest the pin was Ged Chapman with 800cm on the second.

Bill Slee with a big 85 net dominated “Mr Risky.”

RED CLIFFS

Due to the COVID lock down, the Wednesday medley Stableford competition was played on Thursday with a smaller field than usual.

The winner was Michael Morrall on 36 points and runner-up was Steve Johns with 35 points on a countback. 

Balls went to Brian Furey, Kay Hart, Geoff Smith and Glenys Murray. 

Nearest the pins were Steve Johns on eighth and Al Rayner on 18th.

It was not only the weather that was hot on Saturday, there were some scorching scores. 

Travis Johns on 42 points won A-grade from Graham Lohmeyer. 

Brett Overton was the unluckiest player in B-grade scoring 44 points only to be beaten by Keryn Neindorf who was the winner with an amazing score of 46 points. 

Brett lost two shots off his handicap while Keryn lost nine shots. 

Balls went to Mark Collett, Rita Chase, Chris Chase, Daryl Morgan, Brett Johns, Fay Ross, Jill Gleeson, Steve Johns and John Prictor. 

Nearest the pins were Buddy Coad on third, Brett Overton on fifth, Catherine Lanigan and Affie Ganz on eighth, Daryl Morgan on ninth, Jill Gleeson and Tom Minns on 12th, Jill Gleeson and Michael

Hogan on 15th and Deanne Davis on 17th.

RIVERSIDE

Due to the COVID-19 lockdown, the club’s first competition last week started on the 18th.

Caroline James won the Stableford comfortably with 39 points.

Runner-up was Kathy Ridley with 36 points.

Nearest the pins were Lyn Saundrs on fourth with 409cm, Karyn Scheer on seventh with 253cm, Jen Stephenson on 12th with 45cm and Caroline James on 18th with 47cm.

Friday’s nine hole medley Stableford saw Matt Anderson collect the win on 22 points.

It was a four way count back for runner-up, with Gary Van Steenis having the luck fall his way, leaving Ray Cottle, Martin Dane and Tom Wilkinson pondering over what could have been.

Karyne Scheer put her 34 points to good use on Saturday, in the ladies’ Stableford, to add another win to her consistent record.

Nearest the pins were Pat Riordan on seventh with 770cm, Karyne Scheer on 12th with 5.5cm and Heather Klemm on 18th with 252cm.

The men’s Saturday competition was in two grades.

Tezza Simpson put together an excellent winning score of 40 points in A-grade, in front of Peter Ellery with 39 points.

The round of the day came from Cliff Cooke, with an outstanding 43 points.

Leading the field in B-grade was James Scherger on a fine 39 points.

Nearest the pins were Ricky Hayes on fourth with 160cm, Michael Holcroft on seventh with 162cm, John Fraser on 12th with 310cm and Keegan Lee on 18th with 325cm.

Sunday’s medley Stableford needed a four way count back to determine the placings in A-Grade.

David Williams finished on 38 points to take the win, with Craig Jervis in second place, followed by Nicholas George and Larry Cavallaro, all on 38 ppints.

The round of the week was produced in B-grade, after Connor Darby smashed out an amazing 44 points.

Nic Cairns would normally have had a shot at winning with his very fine 40 points, but had to settle for runner-up on this occasion.

Nearest the pins were Jim Callaway on seventh with 645cm and David Williams on 12th with 430cm.

COOMEALLA

The Wednesday February 17 men’s stroke A-grade winner with Greg Rhodes on 67 nett with 66 off the stick.

Runner-up was Ryan Samaras with 70 nett.

Third was Justin Mcphee on 70 nett.

The B-grade winner was Ken Wakefield with 69 nett.

Runner- up was Rob Armstrong with a score of 72 nett.

Third place went to Shaun Wakefield with 73 nett.

Ball comp (14) was 67 nett to 74 nett.

Nearest the pins were James Orpwood on third with 650cm, Andrew Rix on seventh with 205cm, Justin McPhee on 11th with 572cm, James Orpwood again on 18th with 250cm.

The women’s stroke winner was Sue Laird on 75 nett and runner-up was Sonya Golitschenko on 78 nett.

Nearest the pins were Lynda Saunders on third with 225cm, Michelle Blair on 11th with 230cm and Sonya Golitschenko on 18th with 4cm.

Friday February 19 medley 9 hole Stableford winner was Peter Dooley on 19 points and runner-up was Nick Ciccarello on 19 points.

Ball comp (8) was 18 points to 16.

Nearest the pins were Bernie Sprague on 11th with 498cm and Greg Rhodes on 18th with 900cm.

Saturday February men Stableford A-grade winner was Geoff Sayers on 37 points.

Runner-up was Andrew Rix on 37 points.

Third was Greg Rhodes on 36 points.

B-grade winner was Patrick Clancy on 38 points.

Runner-up was Paul Wright on 38 points.

Third was Gary Kerr on 37 points.

C-grade winner was Lee McLeod on 39 points.

Runner-up was Greg Butcher on 39 points.

Third went to Ben Camilleri on 38 points.

Ball comp (25) was 39 to 34.

Nearest the pins were Gary Kerr on third with 490cm, David Guild on seventh with 110cm, Craig Maddigan on 11th with 250cm, Noel Thomas on 18th with 475cm.

The women’s Stableford winner was Sonya Golitschenko with 40 points.

Runner-up was Adel Dal Corobbo on 36 points.

The ball comp (2) was 35 to 32.

Nearest the pins were Nia Whittle on third with 124cm, Sonya Golitschenko on seventh with 490cm, Jackie Horkings on 11th with 30cm and Sally McOrist on 18th with 30cm.

Medley Stableford winner on Sunday February 21 was Chris Grimmer on 39 points and runner-up was Gavan Groves on 38 points.

Third place went to Cayle Cucia with 38 points.

David McDonnell came fourth with 38 points and the ball comp (13) was 39 points to 35 points.

Nearest the pins were Kylie Walters on third with 440cm, Jordan McKinnon on seventh with 150cm, Greg Rhodes on 11th with 410cm and Justin McPhee on 18th with 313cm.
