Bill turns back time

BILL McClumpha, who won Ouyen Lawn Tennis’ first open tournament in 1983, was runner-up in the men’s A-grade singles at the Rohan Gregg Labour Weekend tournament.

The 66 year-old was beaten by Peter Bertoncini in the A Grade final, as the event attracted 160 entries, 45 more than last year.

Josh Gregg took out the men’s open final against Rui Gamo 6-0, 6-1, but club president Paul Dean said the scores did not reflect the competitiveness of the match.

The women’s final was a battle, between the Fitcher girls, Ella and Maggie with Maggie winning the third set tie breaker.

The Fitchers teamed up to win the doubles, and Gregg and Adelaide player Ben Schuler won the men’s open doubles.

Heather Olofsson and Zac Galbraith from Mildura won the mixed doubles.

The president said it was great seeing more than 200 turning out to watch good tennis.

“The turnout was half Ouyen players and the other half were people who travelled down for the event,” Dean said.

“We had a lot of visitors from all over the place. There were lots from Mildura, a few from Melbourne and Josh Gregg came down from Adelaide with his friend Ben.”

Dean said the focus would now be on gearing up for the club’s 40th anniversary next year.

“It’s going to be massive,” he said. “We’re going to try and get as many of our past club champions and members, and anyone who has been involved with the tennis club since we started to come down.

“It was a fantastic seeing people getting (together) as a community, people donating food and helping out wherever they could.”

Jan Morrish and Lyndal Munro became life members at the tournament.
