Mildura’s skate park hosts top tricks

SKATEBOARDERS, scooter riders and BMX enthusiasts are invited to show off their best tricks at Saturday’s Mildura Skate Park Competition.

The event, held at the Mildura skate park near Nowingi Place, will be presented as part of YMCA Skate Park League’s national grassroots community competitions.

The competition aims to encourage local riders out on to the park and to promote a positive skating, scooting and riding culture, while also giving young riders a pathway to competing in their discipline.

YMCA Action Sports operations director Matt Brett said staff were busy preparing for the event, which will include an MC, music and judges.

“It always goes well when we’re up in Mildura, so we’re looking forward to it,” Mr Brett said.

“This year it isn’t over the school holidays, so it is a little bit different, but in saying that the scene for skateboarding and scooter riding there is quite good, so we would expect a good number of participants.

“We encourage people of all levels to give it a shot.”

Participants will be allowed two 45-second runs around the park to perform their chosen tricks, with points accumulated for each trick landed.

Each discipline will run heats for different age groups, including 10 and under, 13 and under, 16 and under and an open competition, with divisions for males and females.

Medals and placeholders will be up for grabs and sponsored gear such as skateboards and trucks, scooter grips, apparel, skate tools and headphones will be raffled.

Heats kick off at 10am with scooters, followed by BMX at 11.30am and skateboarding at 12.30pm.
