West’s triumph in grand final

A TYPICALLY stylish innings from Rhiann O’Donnell and a stunning spell of bowling from young gun Demi Zanoni (pictured) proved the difference as Mildura West surged to a convincing win in TheSunraysia Cricket  Associastion’s cricket grand final on Friday night.

Mildura West was in early trouble after batting first against Mildura Settlers, before O’Donnell, who averaged over 200 runs for the season, steadied the innings with a blistering 33 off just 22 balls before retiring.

Zanoni, who also played Under-14s this season, also showed a mature head with the bat to support O’Donnell, making 12, before later ripping apart the Settlers top order to take 3/8 off four overs.

Zanoni, who also played Under 14 this season, also showed a mature head with the bat to support O’Donnell, making 12, while Hannah Woollard fired late with 19 off 26 balls as the girls in green reached a total of 8/99 off their 20 overs.

Shania McKinnon, Lara Telfer and Jennifer Donnelly each snared two wickets for Settlers.

After also averaging more than 200 with the bat this summer, McKinnon was seen as the key wicket in the run chase. But Zanoni struck a huge blow by claiming McKinnon’s wicket first ball.

She then claimed the wickets of Telfer and Janelle Bertoli as she cut a swathe through the Settlers top order, before combining with Lucy Gallienne-Innes to run out Alex Pallot, and virtually end the Settlers chances in the 20-over format.

Zanoni finished with 3/8 off four overs, while Ruby Woollard was also impressive with the ball, taking 3/11, as Settlers managed just 9/71 to fall well short of West’s target.
