Mildura set to collect Jaguar fans for XJC Coupe celebration

JAGUAR enthusiasts from across South Australia and beyond will roar into Mildura this month to celebrate the 45th anniversary of the Australian launch of one of the rarest collectible cars.

The Jaguar XJC Coupe was officially launched at Mildura’s Old Aerodrome Ovals on the Queen’s Birthday weekend in 1976.

Nearly half a century later, some of the members who were present at the official unveiling will be back in town next weekend to mark the anniversary with a tour of the area and a chance for locals to check out the cars.

Event organiser Philip Prior, president of the Jaguar Drivers Club of SA, said he expected more than 20 Jaguar and Daimler cars to head to Mildura for the event.

According to Mr Prior, the XJC is a particularly special car, with just 241 known to have been distributed in Australia during the time they were in production.

“The production of the XJC was all too short,” Mr Prior said.

“After commencement in 1975, the last of these great vehicles rolled off the line in November 1977.

“Paradoxically, this has helped the XJC to become the rare collectible classic it is today.

“It remains one of, if not the best value, for money classic cars available today. To this day, the XJC is Jaguar’s only two-door fixed-head coupe saloon.”

While in town, the Jaguar club will enjoy some popular Sunraysia sights, including Big Lizzie, Rio Vista House and Trentham Estate winery.

The fleet of XJCs and other collectible Jaguars will be on display at Nowingi Place between 10am and 1pm on Sunday, April 18, along with vehicles from local car clubs.
