Large turnout for Riverside Open

RIVERSIDE

THE weather was magnificent this past week and together with the course being in top condition, the field for 2021 Riverside Open nearly made it to 200. Congratulation to all winners and well done to all who participated.

Results: Men’s scratch – A Grade: Winner: Daryl Morgan (70/71-141). Runner-up: Cameron Stewart (70/74-144).

B Grade: Winner: Atu Akima (83/78-161). Runner-up, Ash Robinson (81/84-165).

C Grade: Winner: Warrick Fisher (87/92-179). Runner-up, Kevin Maginness (92/89-181).

Handicap – A Grade: Winner: Morgan (70/71-141). Runner-up: Craig Jervies (70/72-142).

B Grade – Winner: Atu Akima (70/65-135). Runner-up: France Wilmann (74/69-143) on a countback from Glenn Parker and Ashley Robinson.

C Grade – Winner: Gary McNally (70/71-141) on a countback from Rocky Pipicella (69/72-141) and Warrick Fisher.

Ladies’ scratch – Winner: Sue Laird (77/76-153). Runner-up: Jenny Stephenson (79/79-148).

Handicap – Winner: Malissa Wheatley (73/72-145). Runner-up: Stephenson (73/73-146).

Monday’s veteran and friends comp was won by Peter Ellery (36) on countback from Jerry Stephens.

Ladies’ captain May Connolly came out on the right side of a countback in Tuesday’s par event. Rose Barich just missed out after both finished on –4.

Tuesday’s nine-hole competition saw Sally Watson winning with +1. Lyn Saunders (square) was runner-up after a countback with Maeve Fraser.

NTPs were: June Hensgen (fourth, 325), Lyn Saunders (12th, 85cm) and May Connolly (18th, 85).

Wednesday’s men’s monthly medal was a pleasing day for Grant Giddings, the winner with 82/70.

Ned Klemm left with the A Grade win after his 87/72, from George Riordan on 89/73. Kevin Challis played well (97/71) in B Grade for his win, over Rob Arnold (91/72).

NTPs were: Brad Surgey (fourth, 900), Alan Connolly (seventh, 55), Ash Robinson (12th, 300), Rob Garioch (17th, 24) and Brad Steer (18th, 225).

Thursday was Stableford for the ladies with Ros Nash finishing on top with 34, closely followed by Marg McIntyre and Lisa Garioch two behind.

NTPs were: Pat Riordan (fourth, 390), Lisa Garioch (seventh, 980, and 18th, 72) and May Connolly (12th, 295).

Simon Dale took out the Friday’s nine-hole medley with 22 points from Don Male (21).

In Saturday’s daily comp, a four-way countback needed to determine the winner of the ladies’ section with Chitra Rankin (73) emerging victorious. Jenny Stephenson was second, followed by Malissa Wheatley and Garioch.

NTPs were: Jodene Tuau (fourth, 282, and seventh, 363), Lisa Garioch (12th, 1230) and Rankin (18th, 374).

In men’s A Grade, three crossed the line on 70 net. Craig Jervies took the win with second place going to Daryl Morgan over Jacob Slimmons.

A fantastic score of 67 net gave Ulawi Henry victory in B Grade with another countback on 70 needed for the minor placings. Runner-up went to Warrick Hamilton, followed by Atu Akima and Ash Robinson.

C Grade was won by Warrick Fisher with a ripper round of 68. Mark Duscher was second after a countback with Rocky Pipicella, both on 69.

NTPs were: Steven Johansson (fourth, 145), Damien Goode (seventh, 65), Brad Steer (12th, 15) and Ben Victory (18th, 110).

Sunday’s daily comps: Malissa Wheatley’s 72 gave her the win over Pat Riordan (73) after a count back with Jenny Stephenson in the ladies’ comp.

NTPs were: Sue Laird (fourth, 189), Lisa Garioch (seventh, 620), Jodene Tuau (12th, 1180) and Stephenson (18th, 320).

In men’s A Grade, Ben Doherty’s superb 67 put him on top, from Domenic Vartuli (71).

Atu Akima won B Grade with a fine 66, one in front of Sam Pipicella.

In C Grade, Gary Van Steenis had a lovely round of 70 to win over Steve Turlan (71), who grabbed second after a countback with Gary McNally.

NTPs were: Greg Rhodes (fourth, 103), Tim Peterson (seventh,118), Daryl Morgan (12th, 161) and Kane Brown (18th, 60).

MILDURA

THE Mildura men played single Stableford in two grades last Wednesday.

In A Grade, a countback on 37 points was required with Ross Bowen finishing ahead of Rob Toms and Michael Sette.

Steve Peters’ 37 was enough to win B Grade from Fred Stewart and Ray Quirk (both 35).

NTPs were: Robert Young (first, 140cm), Newton Morrison (second, 131), Ray Quirk (10th, 329) and Geoffrey Hazeldine (12th, 373).

The ladies played single stroke on Friday. Bev Matthews won with 73 net. Sandra Hutchinson was second (7) and Bev Stone third (79).

The men’s Stableford competition on Saturday was in two grades.

Wayne Dahmes had the best score of the day and won A Grade with 42 from Steven Fumberger (41) and Nick Katis (41 – on countback).

Scores were also good in B Grade, where Michael Osborne had 40 points for a win over Ferdi Bergamin (39) and Graeme Tulloch (38).

NTPs were: Thomas Ryan (first, 69), Bradley Fox (second, 83, including the pig prize) and Geoff Hazeldine (12th, 99).

WENTWORTH

THURSDAY’S Stableford was dominated by the two in-form players at the club, Ged Chapman and Howard Hankinson.

NTP was: Hankinson (second, 1225). Mr Risky went to Michael Cook (17 points).

Sunday’s stroke round saw Hankinson feature at the top with a good 70 net. Runner-up was Tom Clark (72).

NTP was: Col Stewart (12th, 400). Mr Risky went to Sunday specialist Max Hodges (88).

VETERANS

A SMALL but enthusiastic group of Sunraysia veterans played Monday’s district event.

Held at the Merbein Golf Club, the single Stableford event was contested by 28 members and saw good scores produced.

The A Grade winner was Peter Gilmore with a very credible 35 points. The runner-up had the same score but Mark Woodhouse was awarded second place after a countback.

B Grade saw a clear-cut win to Maurice Munro whose score of 38 was two clear of Robert Chase.

NTPs were: Doug Matthews (third), Ned Klemm (12th) and Graeme Southwell (16th).

Once again the long eighth was too big a challenge with no one able to land a drive on the green.

Next month’s action takes us to picturesque Riverside Golf Club for another single Stableford event. That will be on Monday, June 7.

COOMEALLA

WEDNESDAY’S men’s stroke A Grade winner was Justin McPhee with 70 from Jack Budd (71) and Phil Matotek (72).

B Grade – Winner: Michael James (70) Runner-up: Ron Moore (71). Third: Mark Lee (72).

C Grade – Winner: Graeme Burrows (66). Runner-up: Peter Chase (71). Third: John Horkings (71).

NTPs were: Aaron Blake (third, 288), Paul Modica (seventh, 220), Troy Neville (11th, 85) and Andrew Rix (18th, 380).

Wednesday’s ladies’ stroke was won by Jackie Horkings (72) from Lee Bottomley (73).

NTPs were: Bottomley (third, 87), Susan Mills (seventh, 687), Suellen Nunan: (11th, 37) and Sonya Golitschenko (18th, 50).

Friday’s medley 12-Hole Stableford was claimed by Barry Waters (22) by a point from Peter Shadwick.

NTPs were: Gary Thomas (third, 160), Greg Rhodes (seventh, 9) and Graeme Polkinghorne (11th, 148).

Saturday’s men’s par saw Rayan Samaras eagle the par-5 12th.

A Grade – Winner: Trevor Carrol: +2. Runner-up: Ross Robertson: +1. Third: Grant Hancock: 0.

B Grade – Winner: Ian Petrac: +1. Runner-up: Peter Chase: +1. Third: Serfet Kuzu: 0.

C Grade – Winner: David Tierney: +2. Runner-up: Greg Butcher: +2. Third: Graeme Burrows: +1.

NTPs were: Jim Fahey (third, 1026, and 11th, 726), Peter Chase (seventh, 52) and Murray Appleby (18th, 800).

Saturday’s ladies par;

Winner: Heidi Schultz: +2. Runner-up: Marg Midgley: +1.

NTPs were: Schultz (third, 54, and 18th, 175), Carol Zimmermann (seventh, 1010) and Linda Jakubans (11th, 135cm).

Sunday’s medley Stableford went to David McDonnell (40) by two over Adam Martin.

NTPs were: Brendan Dean (third, 396) and Michael James (seventh, 450).
