Young leaders to represent Mildura in Youth Parliament

SIX of Mildura’s brightest young leaders have been selected to represent the region in this year’s Victorian Youth Parliament.

Ella Beard, Tuyen Ngoc Dinh, Conor Pall, Aimee Ablett, Emma Pyper and Manosh Roy Singh will get the change to be heard at the highest level of state government when they take to the chambers of Victorian Parliament later this year.

The YMCA Youth Parliament program brings together representatives from across the state, who work together to create a Bill which they will debate in the Victorian Parliament over three days in September.

Participants also get to attend residential camps, where they will receive training in leadership and public speaking as they research issues they’re passionate about as they prepare to present their Bill.

Mildura’s Youth Parliament team have already made a flying start on their proposed Bill, which aims to make “engaging in conduct that constitutes coercive control in a domestic relationship” an offence.

The group, all of whom attend Mildura Senior College, were selected from an “impressive” field of applicants, according to Mildura’s community health and wellbeing councillor.

“There was a very strong response from our region’s young people when we put out the call for expressions of interest earlier this year,” Cr Cyndi Power said.

“The quality as well as the number of applicants was outstanding.

“This is such an encouraging and positive reflection on the young people in our community.

“It shows they feel strongly about important issues and are willing to stand up and do something to bring about change. We should be very proud of our representative team, and those who sent in expressions of interest.”
