Tough task for Toms-less Dogs

SMARTING from a single goal defeat to Imperials last week, South Mildura need to bounce back quickly when they face Irymple in SFNL A Grade netball action.

Last week’s loss leaves the Bulldogs a game outside of the top four and with captain Maddy Toms missing the clash against the fourth-placed Swallows, it will be up to the rest of the side to make a stand.

It was a comfortable 16-goal win for Irymple back on Good Friday, however they will be missing shooter Steph O’Loughlin from that side with an ankle injury.

Toms and Mikaela Saunders were instrumental for South last week, and Sarah Telfer is rising up the scoring charts after sinking 41 shots. It will also be up to their young brigade to help fill the void of their captain.

Irymple are coming off their own loss to the undefeated Wentworth, and have been forced to make some changes in the absence of O’Loughlin.

Having started the year in defence, youngster Mackenzie Wade put in a strong performance up top alongside Sherrie Geister, scoring 26 times. Indi Spratt was also impressive for the blue and gold.

The other match-of-the-round contender sees Mildura, who had the bye last week, face reigning premiers Ouyen United.

It has been three weeks since the Demons hit the court, although that was an impressive win over Irymple, led by young shooter Zara Copley and experienced defender Sharon Watson.

The reigning champs had few issues brushing off Robinvale Euston last week, with defender Tsharni Burns starring and Tayla Willsmore and Ashlee Morrish combining well in attack.

The Eagles face Merbein on Saturday with the Magpies coming off just their second win of the season against Red Cliffs last week, led by experienced pair Rebecca Harvey and Breigh Hammett.

The Tigers meet all-conquering Wentworth at Quandong Park.
