THE next generation of junior female golfers are on the improve.
A trio of young ladies from Sunraysia are taking part in the Australian Golf Foundation’s Junior Girls Scholarship Program, being guided locally by PGA professional Brad Pitt.
Mery Dawt Hnem Par, 13, Nicola Whitney, 11 and Lexie Monaghan, 10, are all taking part in the free program aimed at girls between the ages of 10 and 16, with the aim to get the participants to eventually play in competitions.
The program was created by Australian Golf Foundation director Bonnie Boezeman at the Killara Golf Club and in 2021 has been rolled out to 24 clubs around the country.
Pitt said the program works in conjunction with MyGolf, which runs junior boys and girls golf tuition.
“It’s a free program that includes 20 tuition sessions with the aim to get the participants to eventually play in competition,” he said.
“We started in February this year and we’re about half-way through the program now, and they’ve been doing a great job.
“We played our first holes the other day. The three girls have all come from different beginnings and amounts of experience in golf. They haven’t missed a session and they’ve come along in leaps and bounds.
“At the moment we’ve been working on the shorter game, mostly based around bunkers.”
