Mildura business cleans up after COVID exposure

A MILDURA cleaner has wiped the floor with his Melbourne counterparts who were trying to muscle into Sunraysia to do the deep cleans at the COVID-19 tier 1 and 2 exposure sites over the past week.

Wayne Fletcher and his team of seven cleaners were among the quiet achievers in helping Mildura sweep aside the COVID crunch after a man who later tested positive visited several local sites while he was potentially infectious earlier this month.

The quick-thinking boss of Fletchers Flue Cleaning got his business accredited for deep cleaning as soon as the virus hit Mildura.

It led to his business cleaning up on the financial front as his team did the “thorough” once-overs on exposure sites including Kaffenio, Mr BunMi, Yo Yo Joe’s, Noodle World and blk.Mlk.

The deep clean on Mr BunMi, for example, netted his business about $6000.

“The other side of the business had to close down because we couldn’t travel to do our usual work on rangehoods in restaurants and takeaway shops,” Mr Fletcher said.

“We didn’t know how to price it initially, but I looked at what other companies in Melbourne were charging (for deep cleans).

“They were trying to get the work up here, but I made sure I undercut them,” he added with a cheeky grin.

He said it was quite an onerous task to get accredited as a COVID-19 deep cleaner.

“I spent four hours on the phone with the Health Department to find out what we had to do to get it,” Mr Fletcher said.

“But the next day we got the go-ahead to do the deep cleans after filling out all the paperwork.”

His son, Sebastian, was part of a team of three to do the deep clean at Mr BunMi, which reopened on Friday.

“Most of the deep cleans were done in three to four hours,” the 18-year-old said.

“But we spent about 10 hours doing the deep clean on Mr BunMi, which was a bigger area to cover.

“We had to throw things out like plastic utensils that can’t be washed and could be possibly contaminated.

“We washed everything down with a hospital-grade disinfectant, including all the tables, chairs, menus and all the stuff in the kitchen.

“We made sure we did a thorough clean on all the businesses we went to.”
