SFNL season cancelled

THE 2021 Sunraysia Football and Netball League has been officially cancelled.

The SFNL board announced their decision on Monday via statement from executive officer Peter Walker due to the ongoing COVID situation and lockdowns in both Victoria and New South Wales.

No premierships or individual awards will be given for the season.

Read below for the official SFNL statement:

“Regretfully, the board of the Sunraysia Football & Netball League has today made the difficult decision to cancel the 2021 football and netball finals series due to the ongoing uncertainty surrounding the current COVID-19 outbreak across regional Victoria and New South Wales.

“The announcement to cancel all SFNL competitions for the season is disappointing for the players, coaches, umpires, volunteers and supporters who invest so much time, effort and energy into the season.

“The board shares in the disappointment to be unable to complete the 2021 competition in its entirety. However, the outcome is the unfortunate reality of the challenges the pandemic continues to throw up.

“The weekend’s announcement that regional Victoria would enter at least a 2-week lockdown and the extended NSW border restrictions were major contributors in the board’s decision to terminate the season.

“The uncertainty of the time frame for any possible return to resume competitions were also a consideration.

“Accordingly, no premierships, league medals or individual awards will be given for the 2021 cancelled competitions.

“Although it is disheartening for everyone involved, the SFNL thanks all participants, officials, clubs and volunteers for their contribution to the competitions this year and look forward to a return to community football and netball in the 2022 season.”
