Sunraysia girls shine in Murray-Mallee cricket trial

YOUNG cricketers hoping to represent the Mallee-Murray region in Melbourne met in a practice match in Swan Hill on Sunday ahead of the selection of a final squad this week.

Under-15 girls from Sunraysia and Swan Hill played a 40-over match in Swan Hill, with 13 girls set to be chosen to represent the Mallee-Murray region in the Youth Premier League (YPL) in Melbourne in January.

Former coach and supporter Jenny Donnelly said there were some “absolute standouts” among the 24 girls representing both Sunraysia and Swan Hill.

“(Swan Hill’s) Issy Boulton shone with the bat – she was brilliant. And she was great behind the stumps too,” Donnelly said.

Among the Sunraysia standouts was Makenzie Holy, who hit her highest score of 26 not out, and Mildura West’s Demi Zanoni.

“Demi had a fantastic day,” Donnelly said. “She battered really nicely, and she fielded brilliantly.”

As part of Cricket Victoria’s pathway program, players who take part in the YPL will vie for selection in a YPL training squad, with 13 to be selected to represent Victoria.
