SA brings in border tests for Victorian and NSW travellers

ALL Victorians entering South Australia must now get tested for COVID-19 before and after crossing the border.

On Saturday, the South Australian Government announced that Victoria, New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory had been reclassified as “moderate risk” areas.

Before this announcement, Mildura had been in an area classified as very low risk.

Sharp rise in Mildura case numbers

The SA Government website states that people entering from a moderate-risk location must have a negative test taken in the 72 hours before arrival, get tested and isolate on arrival until getting a negative result, get a following test on day six and not enter any high-risk settings for seven days.

This announcement is due to concerns about the new Omicron variant.

SA Premier Steven Marshall said: “We’re going to put as many speed bumps in the way of the new Omicron variant while we gather more information as to whether or not this really is a very different situation going forward.”

Mr Marshall said testing in SA had a current turnaround time of four to five hours.

SA last week recorded its largest single-day case tally for more than a year with 15 new cases.

Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews said on Sunday he had no plans to implement tougher restrictions in response to the new variant.
