Suns’ form solid at Country Week

THE Country Mallee Murray Suns have been shining this week at the Cricket Victoria under-15 Youth Premier League in Melbourne.

Following their first round loss last week, the Suns picked up victories in Monday’s two Twenty20 games before coming up against a tough Northern Flacons outfit yesterday.

In Monday’s first game against Barwon Rockets, it was a convincing nine-wicket win for the Mallee Murray girls.

Holding the Rockets to 7/47 from their 20 overs, thanks to Demi Zanoni (3/7) and Makenzie Holy (2/4), it took them just 7.1 overs to reach the target.

Abby Collihole (17 not out) and Issy Boulton (15) saw them across the line.

Against North West Wizards on Monday afternoon, the Suns held on for a tight one-run victory.

Batting first, the Suns finished at 6/76 from 20 overs, Boulton (17), Zanoni and Addison Bell (both 11) leading the scoring.

In a tense finale, Mallee Murray just did enough to hold the Wizards to 6/75, Tiare Teopenga taking 2/9 and Zanoni taking 2/14.

Yesterday, the Suns could not stop a strong Falcons batting line-up.

In their 40 overs, the Suns scored 8/162, with Issy Boulton playing a starring role, making 47, playing though the majority of the innings.

Lucinda Marks added an impressive unbeaten 21 down the order, with Ruby Woolard also making 19.

In response, the Falcons reached 2/164 with six overs to spare, led by an unbeaten 84 from Holly Fulton and 49 from Nikita Chaudhary, the pair sharing a 119-run opening partnership.

Holy and Taya Higgins each took a wicket during the innings.

The girls play another two T20 games today against Northern Rivers and Central Highlanders, before their final round game against Western Spirit on Thursday.
