Wakeboarding world targets ‘massive’ Mildura

MILDURA has been earmarked as a showcase location for Wakeboard Victoria for the years ahead.

The Mildura Riverfront will see high-flying action from some of the best riders in the state this weekend for the Melbourne Malibu Mildura Classic event.

A full complement of 38 competitors will take to the Murray River for rounds 2 and 3 of the Melbourne City Toyota Summer Series, including former world under-14 champion Sienna Curran, and world title podium finishers Noah Bollard and Laney Chadwick.

WV president Wade Jeffreys said everyone was excited to put on a show, the first of many for Mildura.

“The Mildura Classic has been earmarked as one of our showcase events on our calendar for the future,” he said.

“The reason behind choosing Mildura is that it’s a massive wakeboarding and tourism area. It’s such a great setting and an ideal location to hold these kinds of events.

“Conditions are looking pretty good at the moment and if they stay the way they are today, the riders will get the best of the conditions. We’re hoping for a big crowd.

“We’ve heard one of the cafe owners nearby talk about expecting 2000 people, which would be great.

“The social media response has been massive – it’s definitely one of the biggest responses we’ve ever gotten for an event.”

Local riders will also compete and Jeffreys hopes that number can keep building for the future.

“We’d love to have more Mildura riders riding for Wakeboard Victoria,” he said.

“We’re coming off the 2020 state championships, where we won against the other states, and our goal is to continue to build further from that position.

“Adding some local riders to the team would mean we’d have all areas covered from the state. I think it could also help showcase our sport a lot better.”

Competition will begin at noon each day along the Mildura Rowing Club lawns, ending at 8pm.
